The Primary School Curriculum:

Listed below is a quick overview of the Revised Primary School Curriculum. The curriculum is presented in six subject areas, some of which are further sub-divided into subjects. These include: Language - Gaeilge and English, Mathematics, Social, Environmental and Scientific Education (SESE), Arts Education (Visual Arts, Music and Drama) and Social, Personal and Health Education (SPHE).

¨         English: The English curriculum is structured to offer children a total language experience in which oral language, reading and writing are fully integrated.

¨          Gaeilge: A greater emphasis on the promotion of oral Irish is at the heart of the Irish Curriculum.

¨         Mathematics: The five strands in the mathematics curriculum are numbers, algebra, shape and space, measures and data.

¨         Science: The four strands of the curriculum are living things, energy and forces, materials and environmental awareness. The school    partakes in Engineering and Science week activities and the fairs with ATU Sligo.

¨         History: Emphasis on local history and a focus on the skills of the historian.

¨         Geography: The three strands are human environments, natural environments and environmental awareness and care.

¨        Arts Education:

  • Music: The three strands are listening/responding, performing and composing. The school takes part in the Music Generation scheme      which is a national partnership programme where children learn to   create, play and perform music at school.
  • Visual Arts: The six strands are drawing, painting, clay, construction, fabric and fibre. The school partakes in Creative Cluster partnerships where external artists carry out workshops with the   children.
  • Drama: Each year in Sooey N.S, we perform a play at Christmas.

¨  Physical Education: Pupils have 1 hour of P.E. per week, as per revised curriculum. Swimming lessons for pupils from 4th—6th class take place during second term. G.A.A. coaches from I.T. Sligo deliver training in the Spring/Summer Term.

¨ Social, Personal and Health Education (SPHE): SPHE takes place in a number of ways in the school and the involvement of    parents at all stages of the programme is essential for its                 effectiveness . Children learn through experiencing a positive school climate and atmosphere and by exploring aspects of the curriculum through relevant subject areas. It includes RSE (Relationships and Sexuality Education)
