Sooey NS are presently in the process of applying for our first Active Schools Flag. We pride ourselves on our promotion of all sports - team and individual - within the school. We believe that children should be exposed to as many sports and outdoor activities as possible to show them the enjoyment that participation in sport brings and the health benefits that go hand in hand with it.
We have a very active Active Schools Committee who have been promoting events throughout the year, not least our annual tug-o-war event which starts off the year in September. Our Active Schools' slogan, created by Shauna McTiernan, is 'Utilise the Power of Exercise' and we've been doing our best to do just that! Below you'll see an overview of how active we've been in all classes this year.
We began the year with our Active Schools Committee organising a fun relay event for the entire school. We had relays and a whole-school tug-'o-war. Well done to the ASC for such a great event - lots of fun and plenty of smiles.
S/Valu Athletics Festival 2024
Well done to all of the children who participated in this year's S/Valu Athletics Festival organised by Sligo Sports Partnership. Children from 4th to 6th Class participated in team relays and individual sprints.
Tag Rugby Event at Sligo Rubgy Club
Thanks again to Sligo Sports Partnership for organising this event. Fun day by the sea for all and a new sport for many of the children in our school!
Our ASC also organised an Active Breaks Challenge in November/December, encouraging all classes to take a ten-minute break from work (and Christmas play rehearsals!) to get up and get active! We used a lot of the Bizzy Breaks activities found on the Irish Heart Foundation website for this. They certainly got everyone's heart pumping!
Orienteering Event @ Cleveragh Park
We partnered once more with Sligo Sports Partnership to participate in a wonderful orienteering event held in beautiful weather at Cleveragh Park in Sligo. Children completed a series of simple to complex orienteering skills, learning how to read maps, symbols and eventually follow a complex orienteering map with specific posts to be visited. Many thansk to SSP for organising.
Partnerships
We have worked closely with Sligo Sports Partnership on a number of occasions this year and they have been a huge source of support for us. Our Infants - 5th Class students participated in Youth Sport West activities after school this year. The focus was on multi-sports with lots of hugely enjoyable orienteering activities! Thanks to Kate and Dearbhla for organising.
We also team up regularly with our two local GAA clubs: St. Michael's and Shamrock Gaels. In recent weeks we've been visited by the CDO of both clubs and they've taken weekly GAA lessons with all of the classes in the school. Many thanks to Aoife & Adam for their commitment and kindness to all of the children.
Playground Leaders
At one of our ASC meetings this year, we decided to introduce Playground Leaders on the Infant yard 3 times a week in orderto encourage the Junior & Senior Infants to practice their fundamental movement skills but also in playing together in a structured and enjoyable manner. Huge thanks to 6th Class for giving of their time with this each week. It's hoped that before the end of the year that we can train 5th Class up on being Playground Leaders so that they can take over the role next year.
Skip Around Europe Challenge
We've just recently participated in the Skip Around Europe Challenge where the ASC encouraged all classes to spend ten minutes of their day skipping as a means of getting daily exercise and as a mental break from schoolwork. Thank you to all of the classes for participating (and the teachers too for their participation!). Well done to those children (and teachers!) who learned to skip - our Playground Laders spent a lot of their time last month teaching the Infant classes how to improve their skipping skills. We'll update soon with a list of the countries/capitals we skipped to and our total number of skips!
Participation in sports events 2024/25
It's been a busy year for the school in terms of participating in sports events and competitions. Apart from the S/Valu Athletics Festival and tag-rugby blitz, we've also participated in the Mini-7s, GAA Amigos skills competition (both hurling and gaelic), FAI 5-a-side soccer competition and this year's Cumann na mBunscol tournament which is still underway. At all times in our school, we encourage participation in a wide variety of sports, both team and individual. Well done to all of the children who've pulled on the Sooey NS jersey in all events this year - you've represented the school brilliantly.
